Known widely as the best One-Day hike in New Zealand, the crossing takes in the most scenic and volcanically active areas of Tongariro National Park, passing between Tongariro and Ngauruhoe, Red Crater and the Emerald Lakes. Although only a day walk you must be prepared for quick and severe weather changes, temperatures can easily dropp below 5 degrees. November through April is the best season for the walk.

A two night, three-day trek around Mt Ngauruhoe, including much of the Tongariro Crossing, starting at Mangatepopo and finishing at Whakapapa Village. Each day offers different highlights.
In summer the huts have gas for heating and cooking as part of the Great Walks system. You have to bring pots, plates and sleepingbag.
